Sanctified by the hymns of Nammazhwar, this temple is the 66th of the 108 Divya Desams and stands on the banks of the Bharathapuzha (Ponnani) river. Beneath the Veda Vimana, the Lord gives darshan as Sri Navamukundan, facing east in a standing posture. In a separate shrine, Sri Mahalakshmi graces devotees as Sri Malarmangai Nachiyar; this is said to be the only ancient temple in Kerala with a separate sannidhi for the Goddess. The utsava murti, Sri Narayanar, with his two consorts, is exceedingly beautiful. According to the sthala purana, nine yogis once performed penance here contemplating Narayana, so the place was called 'Nava Yogi thalam,' which softened over time into 'Thirunavaya,' and the Lord became known as Thiru Navaya Mukundan. It is further told that in the Dwapara yuga Sri Krishna, together with the five Pandavas, performed Pitru puja here on an Amavasya day; hence the temple is renowned for removing Pitru dosha, and thousands of devotees gather on every new-moon day to offer bali and pitru tarpanam. It is also counted among the ancient sthalams where Gajendra worshipped the Lord.

(🙏🏻 சிறப்புக்கள் பல பெற்ற இத்திருத்தலத்தின் பதிவுகள் சில மட்டும்; "மணாளன் மலர்மங்கைக்கும் மண்மடந்தைக்கும் கண்ணாளன் உலகத்துயிர் தேவர்கட்கெல்லாம் விண்ணாளன் விரும்பியுரையும் திருநாவாய் கண்ணாரக்களிகின்றது இங்கு என்று கொல்கண்டே" என, நம்மாழ்வாரால் மங்களாசாசனம் செய்யப்பட்ட இத்திருத்தலம், 108-திவ்ய தேசங்களில், 66-வது வைணவத் திருத்தலமாகும். 'பொன்னானி நதி' எனும் பாரதப்புழா ஆற்றின் கரையில் அமைந்துள்ள இந்த பழமைமிகு வைணவ திருத்தலத்தில் வேத விமானத்தின் கீழுள்ள கருவறையில் நம் பெருமாள், ஸ்ரீ நவமுகுந்தன் எனும் திருநாமத்துடன் கிழக்கு நோக்கி நின்ற திருக்கோலத்தில் அருட்காட்சியளிக்கிறார். தனி சன்னதியில், ஸ்ரீ மலர்மங்கை நாச்சியாராக திருவருள்புரியும் ஸ்ரீ மஹாலக்ஷ்மி தேவிக்கென கேரள மாநிலத்தில் தனிசன்னதி உள்ள பழமையான கோயில் இத்திருத்தலம் மட்டுமே என்பது தலச்சிறப்புக்களில் ஒன்றாகும். (தேவியர் இருவருடன் திருவருள்புரியும் உற்சவர் ஸ்ரீ நாராயணர் வெகு அழகு) ஒரு புராண வரலாற்று நிகழ்விபடி; முற்காலத்தில் ஒன்பது யோகிகள் இங்கு நாராயணனை எண்ணி தவம்புரிந்ததால், இத்திருத்தலத்திற்கு 'நவ யோகித்தலம்' என்றும் பின் அப்பெயர் மருவி, தற்போது அழைக்கப்படும் 'திருநாவாய்' என்றும், நம் இறைவனுக்கு திரு நாவாய் முகுந்தன் என்றும் பெயரானதாக தலபுராணம் கூறுகிறது மேலும், (மற்றுமொரு புராண வரலாற்று நிகழ்விபடி) துவாபர யுகத்தில் ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணர், பஞ்ச பாண்டவர்களுடன் சேர்ந்து இத்திருத்தலத்தில் ஒரு அமாவாசை நாளில் பித்ரு பூஜை செய்துள்ளாராம். அதனாலேயே இத்திருத்தலம் பித்ரு தோஷம் போக்கிடச்செய்யும் திருத்தலமாக சிறப்புற்று விளங்குகிறது. (ஒவ்வொரு அமாவாசை நாட்களிலும் பலி (பித்ரு) தர்ப்பணம் செய்திட, ஆயிரக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் இத்திருத்தலம் கூடுவார்களாம்) நம் திருமாலை எண்ணி கஜேந்திரன் வழிபட்ட சில பழமையான திருத்தலங்களில் இத்தலமும் ஒன்று என்பது தலச்சிறப்புக்களில் மற்றுமொன்றாகும்). 🙏🏻ஓம் நமோ நாராயணாய நமக: 🇮🇳👍🏻*பாரத நாடு!* *பழம்பெரும் நாடு!* *நீரதன் புதல்வர்!* *இந்நினைவகற்றாதீர்!*
