Situated on the northern bank of the Vaigai river, this temple enshrines Lord Veeraraghava Perumal, who graces devotees together with his consorts. Its foremost glory is that the Lord is held to predate the sixteenth century. One of the few ancient shrines in both the city and district of Madurai, its processional deity bears the names Sri Kallazhagar and Sri Andal Nachiyar. Built during the reign of Thirumalai Nayakkar, this ancient Vaishnava temple observes the Chithirai festival as its principal event, and it is to the Lord of this temple that the first honour is given during the celebrated festival in which Kallazhagar enters the river. As an upa-kovil (sub-temple) of the Thirumaliruncholai Kallazhagar temple, its great distinction is that every year, on Chitra Pournami, Kallazhagar comes to meet the Lord of this sthalam. The full-moon (Pournami) worship conducted here for the flourishing of wellbeing and prosperity is widely renowned among devotees.

(🙏🏻 சிறப்புக்கள் பல பெற்ற இத்திருத்தலத்தின் பதிவுகள் சில மட்டும்; வைகை நதியின் வடகரையில் அமைந்துள்ள இத்திருத்தலத்தில் கருவறையில் தம்பதியர் சமேதராக திருவருள் புரிந்திடும் நம் வீரராகவப்பெருமாள் 16-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு காலத்திற்கு முந்தையவர் என்பது தலச்சிறப்புக்களில் முதன்மையானதாகும். மதுரை மாநகரில் மட்டுமல்ல, மாவட்டத்திலும் அமைந்துள்ள சில பழமையான ஆலயங்களில் ஒன்றான இத்திருத்தல உற்சவரின் திருநாமங்கள் ஸ்ரீகள்ளழகர் மற்றும் ஸ்ரீ ஆண்டாள் நாச்சியார். திருமலை நாயக்கர் ஆட்சி காலத்தில் கட்டப்பட்ட இப்பழமைமிகு வைணவ திருத்தலத்தில் முக்கிய நிகழ்வாக நடைபெறும் சித்திரைத் திருவிழா மற்றும் கள்ளழகர் ஆற்றில் எழுந்தருளிடும் உற்சவத்தில் இத்திருத்தல இறைவனுக்கே முதல் மரியாதை தரப்படுவது தலச்சிறப்புக்களில் மற்றுமொன்றாகும்.
