திரு அன்பில், பிரேமபுரி என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுவதும், சோழ நாட்டுத் திவ்ய தேசங்களில் ஒன்றாகக் கணிக்கப்படுவதுமான இத்தலம், அன்பு என்னும் தமிழ்ச் சொல்லிலிருந்து தன் பெயரைப் பெறுகிறது; ஏனெனில் ஸ்ரீமந் நாராயணன் உலகத்தின் அனைத்து நற்பொருள்களையும் தெய்வீக அன்பினால் படைத்தார் என்றும், அவரது வடிவழகும் (வடிவு) கல்யாண குணங்களும் இங்கே வெளிப்படுகின்றன என்றும் மரபு கூறுகிறது. ஆகவே இங்குள்ள மூர்த்தி வடிவழகிய நம்பி (சுந்தரராஜன், அழகியவன்) என்று வழிபடப்படுகிறார்; அவரது தேவியார் அழகியவல்லி அல்லது சுந்தரவல்லி நாச்சியார் ஆவார். முதன்மையான ஸ்தல புராணம் இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது: சுதப (சுதபா) என்னும் முனிவர் கோயில் தீர்த்தத்தில் முழ்கித் தவம் இயற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது, கோபக்கார துர்வாச முனிவரைக் கவனிக்கத் தவறிவிட்டார்; தவளை (மண்டூகம்) ஆகப் பிறக்கச் சபிக்கப்பட்ட அவர், நீரிலேயே தம் தவத்தைத் தொடர்ந்தார்; இறுதியில் விஷ்ணு ஒளிபொருந்திய சுந்தரராஜனாக அவர்முன் தோன்றி, முற்பிறவிப் பாவங்களால் வந்த அச்சாபத்திலிருந்து அவரை விடுவித்தார். இந்நிகழ்விலிருந்தே இப்புனிதத் தீர்த்தம் மண்டூக (மண்டூக) புஷ்கரிணி எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது. இரண்டாவது வரலாறு இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது: மனிதர்களைப் படைத்ததால் தம் அழகின் மீது செருக்குற்ற பிரம்மனுக்கு, ஒரு அழகிய இளைஞனாகத் தோன்றிய பெருமாள், உடல் அழகு நிலையற்றது என்றும், உண்மையான அழகு உள்ளத்தின் நன்மையில் உள்ளது என்றும் நினைவூட்டினார். கோயிலின் விமானம் தாரக விமானம் ஆகும்; பள்ளிகொண்ட திருக்கோலத்தில் எழுந்தருளியிருக்கும் பெருமாளை திருமழிசை ஆழ்வார் தம் பாசுரங்களால் போற்றி இத்தலத்தை மங்களாசாசனம் செய்துள்ளார்.

The Lord Vadivazhagiya Nambi (Sundararaja) with Azhagiyavalli (Sundaravalli) of Thiru Anbil is glorified by:
திருச்சிராப்பள்ளிக்கு அருகில் அமைந்துள்ள வடிவழகிய நம்பி (சுந்தரராஜ பெருமாள்) எழுந்தருளியுள்ள இந்த திவ்யதேசம் திரு அன்பில், இக்குழுவில் திருமழிசை ஆழ்வாரால் மட்டுமே மங்களாசாசனம் செய்யப்பட்ட ஒரே கோயில் (ஆழ்வார்களில் அவர் ஒருவராலேயே). விக்கிபீடியா அவர் இதனை 'இரண்டு பதிகங்களில்' போற்றியதாகக் கூறுகிறது; இவை திவ்ய பிரபந்தத்தின் முதல் ஆயிரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள அவரது படைப்புகளாகும் (திருச்சந்த விருத்தம் மற்றும் நான்முகன் திருவந்தாதி). ஆழ்வார் பெருமாளை அமைதியான பெருமிதத்துடன் சயனித்திருப்பவராகக் காட்டி, பக்தனைச் சரணாகதி செய்ய அழைக்கிறார்; இறையருளையும் அண்டநெறியையும் ஒன்றாகப் பின்னி வழங்குகிறார்.

nAgaththaNaik kudandhai vehkAth thiruvevvuL* nAgaththaNai arangam pEranbil nAgath* thaNaip pARkadal kidakkum Adhi nedumAl* aNaippAr karuththan AvAn.
The primordial, all-loving Lord (Adi Nedumal) reclines upon the serpent-couch of Adisesha at Thirukkudandhai (Kumbakonam), Thiruvehka (Kanchipuram), Thiruvevvul (Thiruvallur), Thiruvarangam (Srirangam), ThiruppEr (Koviladi) and ANBIL, and upon the serpent in the Ocean of Milk (Thiruparkadal) — He takes this reclining repose in close proximity to His devotees with the sole intention of entering and dwelling in the hearts of those who long to embrace Him. (In 'pEranbil', 'pEr' = Thiruppēr/Koviladi and 'anbil' = Thiru Anbil, two adjacent Divya Desams near Tiruchirappalli; the koyil commentary glosses 'anbil – at thiruvanbil, near thiruchchi'.)
