തഞ്ചാവൂരിലെ തഞ്ചൈ മാമണി കോയിൽ, നൂറ്റിയെട്ട് ദിവ്യ ദേശങ്ങളിൽ അദ്വിതീയമാണ്; എന്തെന്നാൽ വെണ്ണാറു നദിയുടെ തീരത്തിനു സമീപം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന, അടുത്തടുത്തുള്ള മൂന്ന് വിഷ്ണു സന്നിധികളോടു കൂടിയ ഒരേയൊരു ദിവ്യ ദേശമായി ഇത് വിളങ്ങുന്നു. ബ്രഹ്മാണ്ഡ പുരാണത്തിൽ നിന്ന് സ്വീകരിച്ച സ്ഥല പുരാണമനുസരിച്ച്, തഞ്ചകൻ, തണ്ഡകൻ എന്നീ അസുരന്മാർ, മൂന്നാമതൊരു രാക്ഷസനോടൊപ്പം ചേർന്ന് ശിവ ഭഗവാനിൽ നിന്ന് വരങ്ങൾ നേടി അത്യന്തം ബലവാന്മാരായി, തപസ്സിൽ മുഴുകിയിരുന്ന പരാശര മുനിയെയും മറ്റ് ഋഷിമാരെയും ഉപദ്രവിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. വിഷ്ണു വ്യത്യസ്ത രൂപങ്ങളിൽ ഇടപെട്ടു: സുദർശന ചക്രം കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം തഞ്ചകനെ വധിച്ചു; യാളി എന്ന പുരാണ സിംഹ-മൃഗ രൂപം ധരിച്ച് ഒരു രാക്ഷസനെ നശിപ്പിച്ചു; വരാഹ രൂപം പൂണ്ട്, ശ്രീമുഷ്ണത്തിലേക്ക് ഓടിയ തണ്ഡകനെ പിന്തുടർന്നു. മരണാസന്നനായ തഞ്ചകൻ അനുഗ്രഹം യാചിച്ചു; ആ നഗരം തന്റെ പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുമെന്ന വരം വിഷ്ണു നൽകി; അങ്ങനെ അത് തഞ്ചാവൂർ എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെട്ടു. ഒരേയൊരു ദിവ്യ ദേശത്തെ ഒരുമിച്ച് രൂപപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ആ മൂന്ന് സന്നിധികൾ ഇപ്രകാരം സമർപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു: നീലമേഘ പെരുമാളിന്, അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം തായാർ സെങ്കമലവല്ലി പ്രത്യേക സന്നിധിയിൽ വാണരുളുന്നു; മണികുന്ദ്ര പെരുമാളിന്, അവിടെ പെരുമാളും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ദേവിയും ഒരേ ഗർഭഗൃഹത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിതരായിരിക്കുന്നു; വീര നരസിംഹ പെരുമാളിന്, ഇദ്ദേഹം തണ്ഡരൈ വിണ്ണഗരം അഥവാ തഞ്ചൈയാളി കോയിൽ എന്നും വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, ഇത് യാളി അവതാരത്തെ അനുസ്മരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഈ മൂന്ന് ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുടെ ത്രയം തിരുമംഗൈ ആഴ്വാരുടെ പാസുരങ്ങളിൽ മഹത്വവൽക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
