కుంభకోణం సమీపంలో గల తిరుక్కూడలూరు బ్రహ్మాండ పురాణంలోనూ పద్మ పురాణంలోనూ స్తుతించబడింది; ఇది సంగమ క్షేత్రంగా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందింది, ఎందుకంటే ఇక్కడ పవిత్ర జలాలు మరియు దివ్య గణాలు ఒక్కటిగా సమావేశమయ్యాయి — 'కూడల్' అంటే కలయిక లేదా సంగమం అని అర్థం — దీని వలననే ఈ స్థలానికి ఈ పేరు వచ్చింది. ఇక్కడి మూలవిరాట్టు ఆడుదురై పెరుమాళ్; లోకరక్షకుడు అనే అర్థంలో ఈయన జగద్రక్షక (జగత్ రక్షక) పెరుమాళ్ అని కూడా పిలువబడతారు, వారితో పాటు తాయారు పద్మాసని (పుష్పవల్లి) కొలువై ఉన్నారు. ముఖ్యమైన స్థల పురాణం ప్రకారం, దేవతలందరూ నందక మహర్షితో (నందగ ఋషి) కలసి భక్తితో ఆరాధించి, స్వామి దర్శనం కోసం ప్రార్థించారు; వారి భక్తికి సంతోషించిన విష్ణువు తేజస్సుతో ప్రత్యక్షమై, వారి విన్నపం మేరకు, భూదేవిని అపహరించుకుపోయిన హిరణ్యాక్షుడనే అసురుని సంహరించాలని సంకల్పించారు. తన వరాహ (పంది) అవతారంలో స్వామి భూదేవిని ఉద్ధరించారు; కావున ఇక్కడ లోకరక్షకునిగా పూజింపబడుతున్నారు. కావేరీ నది తనను తాను పవిత్రం చేసుకోవడానికి ఈ క్షేత్రానికి వచ్చి, స్వామి ఆరాధన ద్వారా తన పవిత్రతను తిరిగి పొందిందని కూడా సంప్రదాయం చెబుతుంది. భక్తిగల ఒక చిలుక ఇక్కడ అనుగ్రహం పొంది ముక్తిని పొందిందని చెప్పబడుతుంది; ఇది ప్రతి జీవి కోసమూ స్వామి అవతరిస్తారని చాటుతుంది. ఒకప్పుడు వరదలలో కూరుకుపోయిన ఈ ఆలయం, మదురై రాణి మంగమ్మాళ్కు కలలో సాక్షాత్కరించింది; ఆమె దానిని త్రవ్వించి తిరిగి నిర్మించింది. ఇక్కడి విమానం శుద్ధ సత్త్వ విమానం; తీర్థం కావేరితో సంబంధించినది; ఈ దివ్యదేశాన్ని తిరుమంగై ఆళ్వార్ మంగళాశాసనం చేశారు.

తిరుక్కూడలూర్లోని ఆడుతురై పెరుమాళ్ (జగత్రక్షక) తిరుమంగై ఆళ్వార్ ఒక్కరి నుండే మంగళాశాసనం పొందారు; ఆయన తన పెరియ తిరుమొழిలో 10 పాసురాల ఒక దశకాన్ని రచించారు. ఈ పాసురాలు భగవంతుని వరాహ అవతారాన్ని, లోకరక్షకుడిగా (జగత్రక్షక / రక్షక) ఆయన పాత్రను స్తుతిస్తూ, కావేరి తీరాన వెలసిన ఈ దివ్య దేశమును కీర్తిస్తాయి. ఈ దశకానికి సంబంధించిన శబ్దశః మూలాధార పాసురం నమ్మకంగా లభించనందున, ఇక్కడ ఎటువంటి ఖచ్చితమైన తమిళ పాఠం పేర్కొనబడలేదు.

The Lord who, though the King of kings and omniscient, did not regard His own greatness but went as a humble messenger (for the Pandavas) — His town is Thirukkudalur, where the hair of the noble, soft-natured women, whose fingers are slender like the kaandhal (flame-lily) flower, spreads its fragrance.
