ജാതിഭേദമില്ലാതെ എല്ലാ ജനങ്ങൾക്കും രാമാനുജർ പവിത്രമായ അഷ്ടാക്ഷര മന്ത്രമായ 'ഓം നമോ നാരായണായ' പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച സ്ഥലമായി ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.

തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ ശിവഗംഗ ജില്ലയിലുള്ള തിരുക്കോഷ്ടിയൂരിൽ സൗമ്യ നാരായണ പെരുമാൾ കുടികൊള്ളുന്നു; ഈ മൂലവരെ ഉരഗമെല്ലനായൻ എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം ശ്രീദേവിയോടും ഭൂദേവിയോടും ഒപ്പം ശേഷശയ്യയിൽ ശയന ഭാവത്തിൽ ദർശനം നൽകുന്നു. ഇവിടത്തെ തായാർ തിരുമാമകൾ നാച്ചിയാർ (ലക്ഷ്മി); അവരുടെ സന്നിധി ഗർഭഗൃഹത്തിന്റെ തെക്കുവശത്താണ്; ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഒരു പുഷ്കരണി തീർത്ഥമുണ്ട്. സ്ഥല പുരാണം പറയുന്നത്: ബ്രഹ്മാവിൽ നിന്ന് വരം നേടിയ ഹിരണ്യകശിപു എന്ന അസുരൻ ദേവന്മാരെ പീഡിപ്പിച്ചപ്പോൾ, ദേവന്മാരും ഋഷിമാരും ഇവിടെ ഒരു 'കോഷ്ടി' (സംഘം/സഭ) ആയി ഒത്തുചേർന്ന് വിഷ്ണുവിനോട് പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചു; ഈ സമ്മേളനത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന് തിരുക്കോഷ്ടിയൂർ എന്ന പേര് ലഭിച്ചത്. പിന്നീട് വിഷ്ണു നരസിംഹമായി അവതരിച്ച്, ദേവന്മാരുടെ ആവർത്തിച്ചുള്ള അഭ്യർത്ഥനപ്രകാരം, ഇവിടെ നിന്ന, ഇരുന്ന, ശയിച്ച എന്നീ മൂന്ന് നരസിംഹ രൂപങ്ങൾ കാണിച്ച് ഹിരണ്യകശിപുവിനെ വധിച്ചു. ശ്രീ വൈഷ്ണവ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം രാമാനുജർ മൂലം ഏറ്റവും പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്: അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആചാര്യനായ തിരുക്കോഷ്ടിയൂർ നമ്പി, ശ്രീരംഗത്തുനിന്ന് പതിനെട്ട് യാത്രകൾക്ക് ശേഷം മാത്രം, രഹസ്യം പാലിക്കണമെന്ന വ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ, പവിത്രമായ അഷ്ടാക്ഷരം (തിരുമന്ത്രം, 'ഓം നമോ നാരായണായ') അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഉപദേശിച്ചു. കരുണയാൽ പ്രേരിതനായ രാമാനുജർ ക്ഷേത്ര ഗോപുരത്തിൽ കയറി, ജാതിഭേദമില്ലാതെ എല്ലാവർക്കും ഈ മന്ത്രം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു; നരകത്തിൽ പോകുമെന്ന് മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നൽകിയിട്ടും, ഇതുമൂലം എല്ലാവരും ഉദ്ധരിക്കപ്പെടുമെങ്കിൽ താൻ സന്തോഷത്തോടെ നരകത്തിൽ പോകാൻ തയ്യാറാണെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു. നമ്പി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ശപിക്കാതെ, 'എമ്പെരുമാനാർ' എന്ന സ്ഥാനപ്പേര് നൽകി; അഷ്ടാംഗ മണ്ഡപത്തിൽ രാമാനുജരുടെ ജീവിത വലുപ്പത്തിലുള്ള വിഗ്രഹം കുടികൊള്ളുന്നു. ഇവിടെ അഞ്ച് ആഴ്വാർമാർ പാടിയിട്ടുണ്ട് — പെരിയാഴ്വാർ, തിരുമംഗൈ ആഴ്വാർ, തിരുമഴിസൈ ആഴ്വാർ, ഭൂതത്താഴ്വാർ, പേയാഴ്വാർ. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അതിന്റെ അപൂർവമായ അഷ്ടാംഗ വിമാനത്തിന് പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്; അത്തരം മൂന്ന് വിമാനങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണിത്; കൂടാതെ അഞ്ച് നില രാജഗോപുരവുമുണ്ട്.

In Thirukoshtiyur, girt with beautiful (painted/storeyed) mansions, on the day when Kannan — Kesava, the Lord (Nambi) — was born, as the joyous people flung scented oil and fragrant powder (saffron paste) at one another in celebration, the whole courtyard of Kannan's home became drenched and turned into slush.

ōḍuvār viḻuvār ugandhālippār nāḍuvār nambirān enguṟṟān enbār pāḍuvārgaḷum palpaṟai koṭṭa ninṟu āḍuvārgaḷum āyiṟṟu āyppāḍiyē
Some run, some fall, some clap their hands and shout for joy; others go searching, asking 'Where is our Lord (the new-born babe)?' Some break into song, while others, as many drums (paṟai) are beaten, stand and dance — thus did the whole cowherd settlement (Āyppāḍi) become, in its overflowing joy at the Lord's birth at Thirukoshtiyur.
