Sthala Purāṇam
మదురైకు సమీపంలో అడవులతో నిండిన సోలైమలై కొండపై ఉన్న తిరుమాలిరుంఛోలై కల్లఴగర్ ఆలయం, సుందరరాజర్, పరమస్వామి, మాలిరుంఛోలై నంబి అని కూడా పిలువబడే కల్లఴగర్ స్వామిని కొలువుదీరుస్తుంది; తూర్పుముఖంగా అభయ ముద్రలో పంచాయుధాలు ధరించి నిలిచిన ఈ స్వామి ఉత్సవ మూర్తి సుందరరాజన్ అని పిలువబడుతుంది. దేవి కల్యాణ సుందరవల్లి నాచ్చియార్; ఉత్సవ తాయార్ వకుళవల్లి అని పేరు. ఆలయపు మూల గాథ, దుర్వాసుని శాపంతో కప్ప (మండూకం)గా జన్మించవలసివచ్చిన సుతపస్ మహర్షికి సంబంధించినది; ఆయనను ఉద్ధరించడానికి విష్ణువు ఇక్కడ కల్లఴగర్గా అవతరించాడు. యముడు ఇక్కడ ఆరాధించాడని, విశ్వకర్మ నిర్మాణంలో సహాయపడ్డాడని నమ్ముతారు. తిరుమాలిరుంఛోలై అనే పేరు పవిత్రమైన మహా వనాన్ని సూచిస్తుంది; అఴగర్ అంటే అందమైనవాడు. విమానాన్ని సాధారణంగా సోమచంద్ర విమానం అంటారు. ఆలయపు అత్యంత ప్రసిద్ధ తీర్థం నూపుర గంగై — కొండ శిఖరంపై ఉన్న అందెల-గంగ ఊట; తేనారు అని పిలువబడే దాని తీయని నీరే స్వామి అభిషేకానికి వాడబడుతుంది. అత్యధికంగా మంగళాశాసనం చేయబడిన Divya Desamలలో ఒకటైన తిరుమాలిరుంఛోలైను ఆరుగురు Āḻvārలు గానం చేశారు; నమ్మాఴ్వార్ తన తిరువాయ్మొఴి 10.7 దశకాన్ని పూర్తిగా ఈ పవిత్ర కొండకే అంకితం చేసి, దాన్ని మోక్ష సాధనంగా కీర్తించారు. ఆండాళ్ తన నాచ్చియార్ తిరుమొఴిలో అఴగర్కు అక్కారవడిసల్, వెన్నలను సమర్పిస్తానని మొక్కుకున్నారు; ఆ మొక్కును తీర్చకముందే శ్రీరంగంలో రంగనాథునిలో ఐక్యమవడంతో, ఆమె తరఫున దానిని ఆమె అన్నగా పూజింపబడే శ్రీ రామానుజులు నెరవేర్చారు. మీనాక్షీ దేవి అన్నయైన కల్లఴగర్ మదురైలోని వైగై నదికి బయలుదేరి, దాని నీటిలో అడుగుపెట్టి, చెల్లెలి వివాహం ముగిసిన తర్వాత చేరడంతో నగరంలోకి ప్రవేశించకుండానే తిరిగివెళ్ళే మహా చిత్తిరై ఉత్సవానికి ఈ ఆలయం హృదయంగా నిలుస్తుంది.

kiLaroLi iLamai keduvadhan munnam vaLaroLi mAyOn maruviya kOyil
In the 'kiLaroLi' decade (2.10), Nammalvar urges the soul to reach Thirumaliruncholai - the hill abode where the radiant, wondrous Lord (mAyOn) has taken His seat - while youth and its growing radiance still last, before youthful vigour fades. He extols the cool, flourishing groves of the sacred southern hill (Solaimalai) as the goal worth attaining.
