ആഴ്വാർമാരാൽ പാടപ്പെട്ട കോവിലാടിയിലെ തിരുപ്പേർ നഗർ, ഈ സ്ഥലത്തുനിന്നോ തന്റെ ഭക്തരുടെ ഹൃദയങ്ങളിൽനിന്നോ താൻ ഒരിക്കലും വിട്ടുപോകില്ലെന്ന പെരുമാളിന്റെ വാഗ്ദാനത്തിൽനിന്നുതന്നെയാണ് അതിന്റെ പേര് ലഭിക്കുന്നത്; ചോളകാലത്ത് ഈ പ്രദേശം പേർ നഗർ എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു; കോവിലാടി എന്ന പേര്, ശ്രീരംഗത്തെ മഹാകോവിലിന് താഴ്ഭാഗത്തുള്ള ദിശയിൽ (അടി) സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതിനെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഇവിടെ കുടികൊള്ളുന്ന മൂലവിഗ്രഹം, പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് അഭിമുഖമായി കിടന്ത കോലത്തിൽ ശയിക്കുന്ന അപ്പക്കുടത്താൻ (അപ്പള രംഗനാഥൻ); തായാർ ഇന്ദ്രവല്ലി അഥവാ കമലവല്ലി എന്ന നാമത്തിൽ കുടികൊള്ളുന്നു. മുഖ്യ സ്ഥല പുരാണം, ദുർവാസ മുനിയുടെ ശാപത്താൽ കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട ഒരു രാജാവിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നു; മുനി ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെടാതെ കടന്നുപോയതിനാൽ രാജാവിന് തന്റെ ബലം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. ഈ ദോഷത്തിന്റെ പ്രായശ്ചിത്തമായി രാജാവ് അന്നദാനം നടത്തി, കാവേരിയുടെ തീരത്ത് ദിനംപ്രതി ഒരു ലക്ഷം പേർക്ക് ഭക്ഷണം നൽകി. ഒരുനാൾ ഒരു വൃദ്ധ ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ വന്ന്, പാകംചെയ്ത ഭക്ഷണമെല്ലാം ഭുജിച്ചിട്ടും തൃപ്തനാകാതെ, ഒരു കുടം (കുടം) മധുരമുള്ള അപ്പം മാത്രം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. രാജാവ് അത് സമർപ്പിച്ചപ്പോൾ, ആ ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ തന്നെത്തന്നെ വിഷ്ണുവായി വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി, ശാപം നീക്കി, അപ്പത്തിന്റെ കുടം ധരിച്ച് ഇവിടെത്തന്നെ ശയിച്ചു; ഇതിൽനിന്നുതന്നെ അപ്പക്കുടത്താൻ (അപ്പത്തിന്റെ കുടം ഉള്ളവൻ) എന്ന നാമം ഉണ്ടായി. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം കാവേരിയുടെ തീരത്തുള്ള അഞ്ച് പഞ്ചരംഗ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. മാർക്കണ്ഡേയ മുനി ഇവിടെ യമന്റെ അകാല മൃത്യു വിധിയിൽനിന്ന് മോചിതനായ സ്ഥലമായും ഇത് ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. നമ്മാഴ്വാർ, പെരിയാഴ്വാർ, തിരുമംഗൈ ആഴ്വാർ, തിരുമഴിസൈ ആഴ്വാർ — എല്ലാവരും ഇതിനെ കീർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്; പാരമ്പര്യം ഇതിനെ മുക്തി സ്ഥലമായി കരുതുന്നു. വിമാനം ഇന്ദ്ര വിമാനം.

The moment I merely uttered 'the hill of Thirumalirunjolai,' Thirumal himself came and filled my heart completely. The place where He went and settled is beautiful ThiruppEr (Thirupper Nagar), on the southern bank of the Ponni (Cauvery) whose waters wash down lustrous great gems. This is the opening verse of Nammalvar's penultimate decade (10.8), all eleven verses of which long for and glorify Thiruppernagar.
