காவேரி நதிக் கரையில் அமைந்த ஐந்து பஞ்சரங்க க்ஷேத்திரங்களில் ஒன்று.
Sthala Purāṇam
ஆழ்வார்களால் பாடப்பெற்ற கோவிலடியில் அமைந்த திருப்பேர் நகர், இவ்விடத்தினின்றும், தம் அடியார்களின் உள்ளங்களினின்றும் தான் ஒருபோதும் நீங்கேன் என்று பெருமாள் அருளிய வாக்குறுதியினின்றே தன் பெயரைப் பெறுகிறது; சோழர் காலத்தில் இப்பகுதி பேர் நகர் என்றழைக்கப்பட்டது; கோவிலடி என்னும் பெயரோ, ஸ்ரீரங்கத்தின் பெருங்கோயிலுக்குக் கீழ்த்திசையில் (அடி) அமைந்திருப்பதைக் குறிக்கிறது. இங்கு எழுந்தருளியுள்ள மூலவர், மேற்கு நோக்கிக் கிடந்த கோலத்தில் பள்ளிகொண்டிருக்கும் அப்பக்குடத்தான் (அப்பள ரங்கநாதர்); தாயார் இந்திரவல்லி அல்லது கமலவல்லி எனும் திருநாமத்தில் அமர்ந்தருளியுள்ளார். மூலத் தலபுராணம், துர்வாச முனிவரின் சாபத்தால் வருந்திய ஒரு மன்னனைப் பற்றிக் கூறுகிறது; முனிவர் கவனிக்கப்படாமல் சென்றதால் மன்னன் தன் வலிமையை இழந்தான். இக்குற்றத்திற்குப் பரிகாரமாக மன்னன் அன்னதானம் செய்து, காவிரிக் கரையில் நாள்தோறும் ஒரு லட்சம் பேருக்கு உணவளித்தான். ஒருநாள் ஒரு முதிய அந்தணர் வந்து, சமைத்த உணவனைத்தையும் உண்டும் நிறைவடையாது, ஒரு குடம் (கூடம்) இனிய அப்பம் மட்டுமே வேண்டினார். மன்னன் அதனை அளித்தபோது, அந்த அந்தணர் தம்மை விஷ்ணுவாக வெளிப்படுத்தி, சாபத்தை நீக்கி, அப்பக்குடத்தைத் தாங்கியவாறே இங்கு பள்ளிகொண்டார்; இதனாலேயே அப்பக்குடத்தான் (அப்பக்குடம் ஏந்தியவன்) எனும் திருநாமம் உண்டாயிற்று. இக்கோயில், காவிரிக் கரையில் அமைந்த ஐந்து பஞ்சரங்க க்ஷேத்திரங்களுள் ஒன்று. மார்க்கண்டேய முனிவர் இங்கு யமனின் இளமைச் சாவு விதியினின்று விடுபட்ட இடமாகவும் இது போற்றப்படுகிறது. நம்மாழ்வார், பெரியாழ்வார், திருமங்கை ஆழ்வார், திருமழிசை ஆழ்வார் ஆகியோர் அனைவரும் இதனைப் பாடியுள்ளனர்; மரபு இதனை முக்தி ஸ்தலமாகக் கருதுகிறது. விமானம் இந்திர விமானம் ஆகும்.

திருப்பேர் நகர் (கோவிலடி), காவேரியின் தென் கரையில் அமைந்த அப்பக்குடத்தான் / அப்பல ரங்கநாதர் திருக்கோயில், சோழ நாட்டுக் கோயில்களிலேயே மிகச் செழுமையான மங்களாசாஸனப் பதிவுகளில் ஒன்றைக் கொண்டது; நான்கு ஆழ்வார்களின் சுமார் 33 பாசுரங்கள் இங்கு உள்ளன: பெரியாழ்வார் (2), திருமழிசை ஆழ்வார் (1), திருமங்கை ஆழ்வார் (மிகப் பெரும் பங்கு), மற்றும் நம்மாழ்வார் (11 பாசுரங்கள் கொண்ட திருவாய்மொழி 10.8 பதிகம், 'திருமாலிருஞ்சோலை மலை'). தம் திருவாய்மொழியின் இறுதிக்கு அண்மையில் நம்மாழ்வார் பாடிய இடமாக இது சிறப்பாகப் போற்றப்படுகிறது; காரணமற்ற கருணையால் பெருமாள் தாமாகவே அவர் உள்ளத்துள் புகுந்த 10.8 பதிகத்தில், ஒவ்வொரு பாசுரத்திலும் 'தென் திருப்பேர்' பெயரிடப்படுகிறது. அதிகாரபூர்வமான koyil.org திவ்ய பிரபந்தப் பதிப்பிலிருந்து ஒரு பாசுரம் (10.8.1) அப்படியே சேர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
திருமாலிருஞ்சோலை மலையென்றேன் என்ன, திருமால் வந்து என் நெஞ்சு நிறையப் புகுந்தான், குருமா மணியுந்து புனல் பொன்னித் தென்பால் திருமால் சென்று சேர்விடம் தென்திருப்பேரே.

The moment I merely uttered 'the hill of Thirumalirunjolai,' Thirumal himself came and filled my heart completely. The place where He went and settled is beautiful ThiruppEr (Thirupper Nagar), on the southern bank of the Ponni (Cauvery) whose waters wash down lustrous great gems. This is the opening verse of Nammalvar's penultimate decade (10.8), all eleven verses of which long for and glorify Thiruppernagar.
