Birthplace of two Alvars - Periyalvar and Andal, the only female Alvar; its Rajagopuram is the emblem on the Tamil Nadu state government seal.

Sthala Purāṇam

Thiruvilliputhur, the Vatapatrasayi temple at Srivilliputhur, holds the singular glory of being the birthplace of two Alvars: Periyalvar (born Vishnuchittar) and Andal (Kothai, Goda), an incarnation of Bhudevi. The Lord Vatapatrasayi reclines (sayana thirukkolam) upon Adisesha, facing east, with Sridevi and Bhudevi at His feet; the name parses as vata (banyan), pathra (leaf) and sayi (one who reclines). It is a famed twin shrine, with Andal's sannidhi to the southwest, where she appears uniquely with Rangamannar (a form of Ranganatha) and Garudazhwar. The name Srivilliputhur recalls its founding: a queen had two sons, Villi and Kandan; when a tiger killed Kandan, Villi, guided by a divine dream, founded a city named after himself, Sri-Villi-Puthur, the new town of Villi. The banyan-leaf legend underlies the Lord's name, for Vishnu is held to have reclined here upon a banyan leaf as the cosmic child during the deluge. The temple's beloved episode is that of Andal, found by Periyalvar as an infant beneath a tulsi plant: she would wear the garland woven for the Lord and admire her reflection before it was offered. Distressed at the discovery, Periyalvar was reassured when Vishnu appeared in his dream desiring only the garland worn by Andal, who was thereafter named Soodikkodutha Sudarkodi, the lady who gave her garland to the Lord. Andal composed the Tiruppavai and Nachiyar Tirumozhi, and is believed to have merged with Ranganatha at Srirangam. The temple tank is the Thirumukkulam (Triveni), formed of three rivers.

Mangalāśāsanam — the Āḻvār pāsurams

The Lord Vatapatrasayi with Andal (Sri Andal Nachiyar) of Thiruvilliputhur is glorified by:

Thiruvilliputhur (Srivilliputhur), the abode of Sri Vatapatrasayi, holds a singular place among the 108 Divya Desams: it is the only one that is the birthplace of two of the twelve Alvars — Periyalvar (Vishnuchittar) and his foster-daughter Andal (Kothai/Goda), the sole woman among the Alvars and an incarnation of Bhudevi. The Lord reclines (sayana / bhujanga-sayana thirukkolam) upon Adisesha facing east, with Sridevi and Bhudevi at His feet; the name parses as vata (banyan), pathra (leaf) and sayi (one who reclines). The shrine is also known as Vadaperungoyil (the great northern temple). Both Periyalvar and Andal performed mangalasasanam for this Divya Desam. Periyalvar, who served the temple by cultivating a flower-garden for the daily garlands offered to Vatapatrasayi, composed the Periyalvar Tirumozhi (and the opening Tiruppallandu of the entire Prabandham); the closing phalasruti verse of nearly every decad of his Tirumozhi carries his hometown signature — pudhuvai / villiputhUr (e.g. periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 3.4.10 'viNNin mIdhu', 3.1.11 'kArAr mEni'). Andal composed the Tiruppavai and the Nachiyar Tirumozhi here; Sri Vaishnava tradition records that she regarded Srivilliputhur itself as Sri Gokulam, her companions as the cowherd-girls, the temple as the home of Nandagopa, and the Lord residing in vadaperungoyil as Krishna. In the Sri Vaishnava framework these constitute two complementary levels of mangalasasanam — Periyalvar's Tiruppallandu as the initial (prathama) salutation to the Lord, and Andal's Tiruppavai as the ultimate (charama) salutation directed to His devotees. The deity is therefore among the few glorified directly by the Alvars who were native to the very kshetram they sang.

Verses & references (3)
  • This closing (phalasruti) verse of the decad describes how the celestials in the heavens longingly worship as Kannan (Krishna) walks the streets of Ayarpadi behind the cattle, captivating the young cowherd maidens. Periyalvar signs himself as Vishnuchittan, the lord (kON) of those of Puduvai (Srivilliputhur), set amid groves where bees swarm; and he declares that devotees who lovingly sing these ten verses will reach the supreme abode, Sri Vaikuntham. The verse is representative of Periyalvar's mangalasasanam because of its signature line identifying him with Srivilliputhur (pudhuvai / villiputhUr). — Periyalvar, periyAzhwAr thirumozhi (Periyalvar Tirumozhi) 3.4.10 – viNNin mIdhu amarargaL · source ↗
  • A phalasruti verse closing a decad in which Periyalvar sings, in Yashoda's voice, of Krishna's cloud-dark complexion and her tender care in nursing him. The verse closes with Periyalvar's standard signature identifying him as the king/lord of Puduvai (Srivilliputhur) and as Vishnuchittan, one who holds the Lord ever in his heart. Cited as a representative Srivilliputhur-signed verse of Periyalvar's mangalasasanam. — Periyalvar, periyAzhwAr thirumozhi (Periyalvar Tirumozhi) 3.1.11 – kArAr mEni niRaththu (phalasruti) · source ↗
  • Andal composed both the Tiruppavai (30 verses) and the Nachiyar Tirumozhi (143 verses) at Srivilliputhur, expressing her bridal longing for Vishnu as Krishna. Sri Vaishnava commentarial tradition (per koyil.org) records that Andal regarded Srivilliputhur as Sri Gokulam, the temple as the home of Nandagopa, and the Lord residing in the Srivilliputhur shrine (vadaperungoyil / Vatapatrasayi) as Kanna (Krishna), her companions being the cowherd-girls. Her Tiruppavai is held to be mangalasasanam at the ultimate (charama) level, directed to the Lord's devotees. No specific verse is quoted here verbatim because the standard online editions (koyil.org) render the text in romanized transliteration rather than verified Tamil script; the attribution of the works to this kshetram is firmly sourced, but the exact Tamil characters are not reproduced to avoid error. — Andal, nAchchiyAr thirumozhi (Nachiyar Tirumozhi) / thiruppAvai (Tiruppavai) Nachiyar Tirumozhi and Tiruppavai (composed at Srivilliputhur) · source ↗
