This ancient Vaishnava temple at Narasingapuram, built by the Pallavas and reckoned about 1500 years old, enshrines Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar in a rare and tender form. Some seven and a half feet tall, the Lord is seated with His right foot placed down and left leg folded, bearing a gentle smile, with Thayar Mahalakshmi seated upon His left lap; He embraces her with His left hand while His right hand shows the abhaya hasta. Ordinarily in Lakshmi Narasimhar shrines the Goddess sits looking to the side, but here the Thayar faces the devotees and lovingly embraces Narasimhar, a rare vision that gives the Lord His additional name 'Kalyana Lakshmi Narasimhar.' Worshipping this divine couple is believed to remove the fear of enemies, bestow the grace of Lakshmi, and strengthen harmony between husband and wife. In a separate east-facing shrine to the southwest, Sri Marakathavalli Thayar graces devotees, five feet tall and seated with abhaya hasta. Renovated by the Cholas and Vijayanagara kings, the temple is dear to those born under Swati nakshatra, and the thirumanjana abhishekam performed for the divine couple on Swati day is especially sacred.
