Perched over 1,000 feet high on Perumal Malai near the Kolli and Pachai hill ranges, this hilltop shrine enshrines the Lord as Sri Prasanna Venkatachalapathy, gracing devotees facing east with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Believed to have been built in the 11th century by a grandson of Rajaraja Chola, the temple is reached by climbing 1,564 steps or by a five-kilometre motorable hill road. Revered as a form of Malayappa Swamy of immense power and sanctity, devotees affectionately call this sacred hill 'Then Tirupati' (the Tirupati of the South). The pillars of the temple mandapam bear sculptures of Sri Narasimha and Sri Ramanuja, proclaiming the artistic glory of the Chola era. Purattasi Saturdays draw great crowds and festivity. Among its most special observances are the Pournami (full-moon) girivalam around the hill's base and the Vaikasi Visakam chariot festival, when the ther processes majestically around the Perumal hill.
