The cradle of the Divya Prabandham — where the three Mudal Alvars composed their first Tiruvandadis; the Lord stands as Trivikrama with His foot raised.
Sthala Purāṇam
Thirukkovilur (Tirukoyilur), on the banks of the Then Pennai (South Pennar) river in Kallakurichi district, enshrines Ulagalanda Perumal (Trivikrama) as an imposing image with His foot raised, recalling the Vamana–Trivikrama avatara. The Thayar is Poongkoval Nachiyar, the tirtham is Krishna Theertham and the vimanam the Sreekara Vimanam. By tradition the three Mudal Azhwars — Poigai, Bhoothath and Pey — sheltered in the narrow hermitage of sage Mrikandu here on a stormy night; feeling the presence of the Lord with Lakshmi between them in the cramped space, they composed their first three Tiruvandadis in His praise — making this the cradle of the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. The temple was later rebuilt by Rajendra Chola.
