Sthala Purāṇam
പുരാതന ചോള തലസ്ഥാനമായ ഉറൈയൂരിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന തിരുക്കോഴി, വാസുദേവന്റെ സുന്ദരമായ വരരൂപമായ അഴകിയ മണവാള പെരുമാളിനെ, നിന്ന ഭാവത്തിൽ ആരാധന സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നവനായി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. തിരുക്കോഴി (പവിത്ര കോഴി) എന്ന പേര്, ക്ഷേത്രപാരമ്പര്യത്തിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഒരു യുദ്ധത്തിൽ നിന്നുണ്ടായതാണ്; ഇവിടെത്തന്നെ ഒരു കോഴി ഒരു ആനയോട് പൊരുതി അതിനെ ജയിച്ചു, കോഴി തന്നെ വിജയിയായി; ഇതിനാൽ ഈ സ്ഥലം കോഴിയൂർ എന്നും പിന്നീട് തിരുക്കോഴി എന്നും അറിയപ്പെട്ടു. പ്രധാന സ്ഥല പുരാണം തായാർ കമലവല്ലി (കോമളവല്ലി) നാച്ചിയാരെക്കുറിച്ചാണ്. സന്താനമില്ലാത്ത ചോള രാജാവ് നന്ദ ചോഴൻ, വേട്ടയ്ക്കു പോയപ്പോൾ, ഒരു വനസരസ്സിൽ ആയിരം ഇതളുള്ള താമരയ്ക്കുള്ളിൽ ഇരുന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു ശിശുകന്യകയെ കണ്ടെത്തി; താമരയിൽ ജനിച്ചതിനാൽ അവൾക്ക് കമലവല്ലി എന്നു പേരിട്ട്, രാജകുമാരിയായി വളർത്തി. ഭക്തിമയിയായി വളർന്ന അവൾ, ശ്രീരംഗത്തിൽ രംഗനാഥ പെരുമാളിനെ ദർശിച്ച് അവിടുത്തേക്കായി കൊതിച്ച്, കാവേരിയുടെ തീരത്ത് തപസ്സനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. പെരുമാൾ ഇവിടെ തേജോമയനായ വരൻ അഴകിയ മണവാളനായി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ട് അവൾക്ക് സംയോഗം അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു; ഇതിനാൽത്തന്നെ ഈ ദേവാലയം അവിടുത്തെ പേര് വഹിക്കുന്നു. ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ കാര്യം, കമലവല്ലിയുടെ ശ്രീകോവിൽ വടക്കോട്ട് അഭിമുഖമാണ് — അധിഷ്ഠാന ദേവി ആ ദിശയിലേക്ക് അഭിമുഖമായിരിക്കുന്ന ഏക ദിവ്യ ദേശം ഇതാണ്. ഈ പവിത്രബന്ധം ഓരോ പങ്കുനി മാസത്തിലും സേർത്തി (സംയോഗ) ഉത്സവത്തിൽ ആദരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു; അപ്പോൾ രംഗനാഥൻ തന്റെ വധുവിനെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്യാൻ ശ്രീരംഗത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഇവിടേക്ക് എഴുന്നള്ളുന്നു. വിമാനം കല്യാണ വിമാനമാണ്; അതിന്റെ തീർത്ഥം സൂര്യ പുഷ്കരിണിയാണ്. തിരുമംഗൈ ആഴ്വാരും കുലശേഖര ആഴ്വാരും ഈ ദിവ്യ ദേശത്തെ നാലായിര ദിവ്യ പ്രബന്ധത്തിൽ പാടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
Mangalāśāsanam — the Āḻvār pāsurams
The Lord Azhagiya Manavalan (Vasudeva) with Kamalavalli (Komalavalli) of Thirukkozhi is glorified by:
തിരുക്കോഴി (ഉറൈയൂർ), കാവേരിയുടെ തീരത്ത് ശ്രീരംഗത്തിന് അഭിമുഖമായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന അഴകിയ മണവാളനും ഠായാർ കമലവല്ലി നാച്ചിയാരും വാഴുന്ന ധാമം, രണ്ട് Āḻvārമാരിൽ നിന്ന് Mangalāśāsanam നേടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. തിരുമംഗൈ Āḻvār പെരുമാളെ സ്തുതിക്കുന്നു (ഒരു pāsuram, ഇത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പെരിയ തിരുമൊഴിയിൽ Divya Prabandham pāsuram 1762 ആയി എണ്ണപ്പെടുന്നു). കുലശേഖര Āḻvār, തന്റെ പെരുമാൾ തിരുമൊഴിയുടെ രണ്ടാം ദശകത്തിൽ 'thEttarum thiRal' എന്ന് ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന പദ്യങ്ങളിൽ (ശ്ലോകങ്ങൾ 658-667, ഉറൈയൂർ/അഴകിയ മണവാളൻ സംബന്ധിച്ച പരാമർശം pāsuram 667), തന്റെ ഭക്തി ചൊരിഞ്ഞ്, അഴകിയ മണവാള Perumāḷ-നോടുള്ള പ്രേമത്താൽ താൻ ഉന്മത്തനായിത്തീർന്നു എന്ന് പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്നു. ഇരുവരും ചേർന്ന് ഈ ധാമത്തിന് Divya Desam പദവി നൽകുന്നു.
கோழியும் கூடலும் கோயில் கொண்ட கோவலரே ஒப்பர் குன்றமன்ன பாழியும் தோளும் ஓர் நான்கு உடையர் பண்டு இவர் தம்மையும் கண்டறியோம் வாழியரோ இவர் வண்ணம் எண்ணில் மாகடல் போன்றுளர் கையில்வெய்ய ஆழி ஒன்று ஏந்தி ஓர் சங்கு பற்றி அச்சோ ஒருவர் அழகியவா!

This lustrous Lord, the divine cowherd (Gopala) who has taken Kozhi (Uraiyur / Thirukkozhi), Koodal (Thirukoodal, Madurai) and Koyil (Srirangam) as His sacred abodes, resembles a hill in His might. He bears four mountain-like, broad shoulders; never before have we beheld anyone like Him. May He be blessed! His complexion, when one ponders it, is like the great dark ocean. Holding the fierce discus (chakra) in one hand and grasping a conch in the other, Acho! How beautiful this peerless One is!

Kulasekhara Alvar exalts the Lord as the rare, mighty nectar (thEn), the beautiful one of southern Arangam (Sri Ranganatha, identified with Azhagiya Manavalan of the Uraiyur bank), on whose chest the never-fading forest garland and Sri (Lakshmi) reside. He sings that the very purpose of having eyes is to behold the Lord and His devotees, and proclaims himself intoxicated and mad with love for Azhagiya Manavala Perumal.
