கும்பகோணத்திற்கு அருகே நாதன் கோயிலில் அமைந்துள்ள ஜகந்நாத பெருமாள் கோயில், நூற்றெட்டு திவ்ய தேசங்களில் இருபத்தோராவதாகும்; இங்கு விஷ்ணு ஜகந்நாதராகவும், நாதநாதன் என்றும் வழங்கப்பெறும் திருநாமத்துடன், தம் தேவியாரான ஷெண்பகவல்லி தாயாருடன் வழிபடப்படுகிறார். முதன்மையான ஸ்தல புராணம் சிவபெருமானின் புனித எருதான நந்தியை மையமாகக் கொண்டது. ஒருகால் நந்தி, விஷ்ணுவின் துவாரபாலகர்களாகிய தெய்வீக வாயில் காவலர்களுக்கு உரிய மரியாதையைச் செலுத்தத் தவறினார்; அதனால் அவருடைய உடல் தாங்கொணா வெப்பத்தால் எரியுமாறு சாபம் பெற்றார். துயருற்று அவர் சிவபெருமானிடம் ஆலோசனை நாடினார்; சிவன் அவரை ஷெண்பகாரண்யத்தை நோக்கி அனுப்பினார் — இன்று கோயில் அமைந்துள்ள ஷெண்பக (சண்பக) மரங்கள் நிறைந்த அந்த வனத்தை நோக்கி — அங்கு லட்சுமி தாயார் தாமே விஷ்ணுவின் திருமார்பில் இடம்பெற விரும்பித் தவம் இயற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். நந்தியின் தவத்தினால் மகிழ்ந்த நாராயணப் பெருமான் தோன்றி, அவரைச் சாபத்திலிருந்து விடுவித்தார்; அதே சமயம் லட்சுமியைத் தம் திருநெஞ்சில் வரவேற்று ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார். நந்தி இங்கேயே திருவருள் பெற்றதனால், இவ்விடம் நந்திபுரம் என்றும், கோயில் நந்திபுர விண்ணகரம் என்றும் பெயர் பெற்றது; விண்ணகரம் என்பது வானுலகக் கோயில் என்று பொருள்படும்; புனித தீர்த்தம் நந்தி தீர்த்தம் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது, மற்றொரு நீர்நிலை நந்தி புஷ்கரிணி எனப்படுகிறது. இரண்டாவது ஐதீகம் சிபி சக்கரவர்த்தியை நினைவுகூர்கிறது; அவர் தம்மைத் துரத்திவந்த பருந்திடமிருந்து புறாவைக் காப்பாற்ற தம் சொந்த சதையையே அர்ப்பணித்தார்; அந்தத் தன்னலமற்ற செயலைக் கண்டு விஷ்ணு அவருக்கு அருள்புரிந்தார்; அந்தச் செயலைப் போற்றும் பொருட்டு அவர் மேற்கு நோக்கி எழுந்தருளியிருக்கிறார் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. கோயிலின் விமானம் மந்தர விமானம் ஆகும். திருமங்கை ஆழ்வார் நாலாயிர திவ்ய பிரபந்தத்தில் இத்திருத்தலத்தின் பெருமையைப் பாடி பதினொரு பாசுரங்களைத் தந்தருளினார்.
Mangalāśāsanam — the Āḻvār pāsurams
The Lord Jaganatha Perumal (Vinnagara Perumal) with Shenbagavalli of Thirunandhipura Vinnagaram is glorified by:
கும்பகோணம் அருகே நாதன் கோயிலில் அமைந்துள்ள ஜகந்நாத பெருமாள் கோயிலான திருநந்திபுர விண்ணகரம், இங்கு தவம் செய்து விஷ்ணுவால் சாபம் நீக்கப்பட்ட நந்தி (சிவனின் ரிஷபம்) என்பவரிலிருந்து தன் பெயரைப் பெறுகிறது; எம்பெருமான் இங்கு வாள், வில், சக்கரம், சங்கு, தண்டம் ஏந்தி அமர்ந்த திருக்கோலத்தில், மேற்கு நோக்கிய மந்தார விமானத்தின் கீழ் எழுந்தருளியுள்ளார். இக்கோயிலின் Mangalāśāsanam திருமங்கை Āḻvār ஒருவரால் மட்டுமே செய்யப்பட்டது; அவர் தம் பெரிய திருமொழியில் இக்கோயிலைப் போற்றியுள்ளார் (பொதுவாக பத்து அல்லது பதினொரு பாசுரங்கள் எனக் குறிப்பிடப்படுகிறது).

O mind, reach Nandhipura Vinnagaram! This is the town where the Lord stands as Krishna, the son of Nandagopa, who removed the deep sorrow that tormented the heart of his father (Nandagopa, and Vasudeva) and dispelled the darkness; here the immortal devas worship him as 'this is our Lord, our father' with fragrant flowers. It is the town surrounded by groves where peacocks, mistaking the soft sound of the festive drums for the rumble of rain-clouds, rise up and dance. It is the very town that Nandi (the bull of Shiva) served in worship.

O mind, reach Nandhipura Vinnagaram! Here dwells the great Lord (as Narasimha) who, when the demon came raging to fight him, his fangs gleaming like the crescent moon, stood and crushed that demon's limbs to powder with a crunching sound, his belly aflame. It is the town with tall mango groves where caged-plumed peacocks and cuckoos throng, where flowers shed and bees hum, the honey-rich groves over which the rain-clouds glide.
நறைசெய் பொழில் மழைதவழும் நந்திபுர விண்ணகரம் நண்ணி உறையும் உறைகொள் புகர் ஆழி சுரிசங்கம் அவை அங்கை உடையானை ஒளிசேர் கறைவளரும் வேல்வல்ல கலியன் ஒலிமாலை இவை ஐந்தும் ஐந்தும் முறையில் இவை பயில வல்ல அடியவர்கள் கொடுவினைகள் முழுது அகலுமே

These ten garland-like verses of melodious words were composed by Kaliyan (Thirumangai Alvar), master of the bright, blood-stained spear, upon the Lord who bears in his beautiful hands the lustrous discus and the coiled conch, and who dwells fittingly in Nandhipura Vinnagaram of honey-laden groves over which the rain-clouds glide. The devotees who can recite these ten verses in proper order will have all their cruel sins (karmas) wholly removed.
