ചെങ്ങന്നൂർ പ്രദേശത്തെ അഞ്ച് പഞ്ച പാണ്ഡവ Divya Desam ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്ന്; ഭീമൻ പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.

ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിൽ ചെങ്ങന്നൂരിനു സമീപം പുലിയൂരിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന തിരുപ്പുലിയൂർ, ഭഗവാൻ മായപിരാൻ എന്ന തിരുനാമത്തിൽ ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ദിവ്യദേശമാണ്; ഇദ്ദേഹം തിരുപ്പുലിയൂരപ്പൻ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇവിടെ മൂർത്തി നിന്ദ്ര തിരുക്കോലത്തിൽ (നിൽക്കുന്ന ഭാവത്തിൽ) കിഴക്കോട്ട് അഭിമുഖമായി വാഴുന്നു, തായാർ പൊർകൊടി നാച്ചിയാർ ആകുന്നു. വിമാനം പുരുഷസൂക്ത (പുരുഷോത്തമ) വിമാനമാണ്, പുണ്യതീർഥങ്ങളിൽ പൂഞ്ചുനൈ തീർഥം ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇത് ചെങ്ങന്നൂർ പ്രദേശത്തെ അഞ്ച് പഞ്ച പാണ്ഡവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്; ഇത് രണ്ടാമത്തെ പാണ്ഡവനായ ഭീമനോട് ചേർത്തുപറയപ്പെടുന്നു — മഹാഭാരതയുദ്ധത്തിനുശേഷം സഹോദരന്മാരുടെ തീർഥയാത്രയ്ക്കിടെ അദ്ദേഹമാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പണിയിച്ച് മൂർത്തിയെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പ്രധാന സ്ഥല പുരാണം ഇവിടെ തപസ്സനുഷ്ഠിച്ച സപ്തർഷികളെ (ഏഴു മഹാ ഋഷിമാരെ) സംബന്ധിച്ചതാണ്; ഒരു രാജാവിന്റെ കാഴ്ചകൾ അവർ നിരസിച്ചുവെന്നും, ഒരു അസുരനിൽ നിന്ന് ഭഗവാൻ നൽകിയ ദിവ്യരക്ഷ ദർശിച്ചതിനുശേഷം മാത്രമേ — അതിനുശേഷം ഭഗവാന്റെ സേവ ലഭിച്ച് ഈ സ്ഥലത്തുവെച്ചുതന്നെ മുക്തി (മോക്ഷം) പ്രാപിച്ചുവെന്നും ഐതിഹ്യം പറയുന്നു. ഈ തിരുത്തലത്തെ നമ്മാഴ്വാർ പാടിസ്തുതിച്ചു; അദ്ദേഹം നാലായിര ദിവ്യ പ്രബന്ധത്തിൽ മായപിരാനെ വാഴ്ത്തി പത്തു പാസുരങ്ങൾ രചിച്ചു, കൂടാതെ തിരുമംഗൈ ആഴ്വാരുടെ സിറിയ തിരുമടലിലും ഇതിന്റെ പരാമർശമുണ്ട്; ഇതുമൂലം ഈ തിരുത്തലം 108 ദിവ്യദേശങ്ങളിൽ ഉറപ്പായ സ്ഥാനം നേടി. ഇത് കേരള വാസ്തുശൈലിയിൽ നിർമിച്ചതാണ്. പ്രധാന ഉത്സവങ്ങളിൽ മാർഗഴി മാസത്തിലെ ആറാട്ടും തൈ മാസത്തിലെ കാവടിയാട്ടവും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
Mangalāśāsanam — the Āḻvār pāsurams
The Lord Mayapiran (Thripuliyoorappan) with Porkodi Nachiyar of Thiruppuliyur is glorified in 10 pāsurams by:
കുട്ടനാട്, കേരളത്തിലെ തൃപ്പുലിയൂർ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രം (തിരുപ്പുലിയൂർ; മൂർത്തി മായപ്പിരാൻ / തൃപ്പുലിയൂരപ്പൻ) ഒരു മലൈനാടു Divya Desam ആകുന്നു. Nammāḻvār ഇതിന്റെ Mangalāśāsanam തിരുവായ്മൊഴി 8.9 ദശകത്തിൽ ('കരുമാണിക്ക മലൈ മേൽ') പാടുന്നു; ഇതിൽ നീലമണിവർണനായ കറുത്ത Perumāḷ-നെ താമരകളാൽ അലങ്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട രത്ന-പർവതത്തോട് ഉപമിക്കുന്നു. Thirumangai Āḻvār തന്റെ സിറിയ തിരുമടലിലും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ പരാമർശിക്കുന്നു.
கருமாணிக்க மலைமேல் மணித்தடந்தாமரைக் காடுகள்போல், திருமார்வு வாய்கண்கை யுந்திகாலுடை யாடைகள் செய்யபிரான், திருமால் எம்மான் செழுநீர்வயல் குட்டநாட்டுத் திருப்புலியூர், அருமாயன் பேரன்றிப் பேச்சிலள் அன்னைமீர் இதற்கு என்செய்கேனோ.
karu mANikka malai mEl maNiththadandhAmaraik kAdugaL pOl, thirumArvu vAy kaN kai undhi kAl udai AdaigaL seyya pirAn, thirumAl emmAn sezhu nIr vayal kutta nAttuth thiruppuliyUr, aru mAyan pEr anRip pEchchilaL annaimIr idhaRken seygEnO.
Like clusters of jewel-like wide lotuses blooming upon a dark-sapphire (karu-maanikkam) hill, the red-hued Lord bears beauty on His sacred chest, mouth, eyes, hands, navel, feet and garments. He is Thirumal, my Master, who resides at Thiruppuliyur in fertile, water-rich Kuttanadu. O mothers! This girl will speak nothing but the names of that wondrous Maayan (Mayapiran) — what am I to do for her?
அன்னைமீர் இதற்கு என்செய்கேன்? அணிமேருவின் மீதுலவும், துன்னு சூழ்சுடர் ஞாயிறும் அன்றியும் பல்சுடர்களும்போல், மின்னு நீள்முடி ஆரம் பல்கலன் தானுடை எம்பெருமான், புன்னை அம்பொழில் சூழ் திருப்புலியூர் புகழும் இவளே.
annaimīr idhaṟku eṉ seygēṉ? aṇimēruviṉ mīdhulavum, thuṉṉu sūzhsudar ñāyiṟum aṉṟiyum palsudarkaḷumpōl, miṉṉu nīḷmudi āram palkalaṉ thāṉudai emperumāṉ, puṉṉai ambozhil sūzh thiruppuliyūr pugazhum ivaḷē.
O mothers! What am I to do for her? Like the dense radiant sun that circles over the lovely Mount Meru, and like a host of many other shining lights, my Lord wears a glittering tall crown, garlands and many ornaments. This girl does nothing but praise that Lord of Thiruppuliyur, ringed by beautiful groves of punnai (mast-wood) trees.
