തിരുവെള്ളറൈ, ഒരു ചെറിയ വെളുത്ത പാറയുടെ മുകളിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതിനാൽ ശ്വേതഗിരി (വെളുത്ത മല) എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു; ഇത് ഏറ്റവും പുരാതനവും ഏറ്റവും ആരാധ്യവുമായ ദിവ്യദേശങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്; ഇവിടെ പുണ്ഡരീകാക്ഷൻ പെരുമാൾ (താമരക്കണ്ണൻ, കണ്ണൻ) നിൽക്കുന്ന രൂപത്തിൽ കുടികൊള്ളുന്നു. ഇതിന്റെ സ്ഥല പുരാണം പല പവിത്രമായ ഇഴകളെ ഒന്നായി നെയ്തെടുക്കുന്നു. പുണ്ഡരീക മഹർഷി ഇവിടെ ഒരു പൂന്തോട്ടം പരിപാലിക്കുകയും തുളസിയാൽ വിഷ്ണുവിനെ ഭക്തിയോടെ ആരാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു; സന്തുഷ്ടനായ ഭഗവാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ദർശനം നൽകി പുണ്ഡരീകാക്ഷൻ എന്ന നാമം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. മറ്റൊരു കഥയനുസരിച്ച്, അയോധ്യയിൽനിന്ന് യാത്രചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്ന ശിബി ചക്രവർത്തിയെ ദൈവഹിതത്താൽ ശ്വേതഗിരിയിൽ തടഞ്ഞുനിർത്തുകയും ഇവിടെ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം പണിയാൻ കല്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഒരു പ്രസിദ്ധമായ സംഭവം, ഓടിക്കപ്പെട്ടുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ഒരു വെളുത്ത പന്നിയെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നു; അത് മാർക്കണ്ഡേയ മഹർഷി തപസ്സനുഷ്ഠിച്ച പുറ്റിന് സമീപമുള്ള ഒരു കുഴിയിൽ മറഞ്ഞുപോയി; ആ പുറ്റ് പാലുകൊണ്ട് അലിയിക്കാൻ മഹർഷി രാജാവിനെ ഉപദേശിച്ചു; അപ്പോൾ വിഷ്ണു പുണ്ഡരീകാക്ഷന്റെ അർച്ചാമൂർത്തിയായി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. പാരമ്പര്യമനുസരിച്ച്, ശിബി ഈ ദേവനെ ൩,൭൦൦ വൈഷ്ണവരോടൊപ്പം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കേണ്ടിയിരുന്നു; അവരിൽ ഒരാൾ പരമപദം പ്രാപിച്ചപ്പോൾ, ആ പവിത്രസംഖ്യ ഭഗവാൻ തന്നെ പൂർത്തിയാക്കി. ഈ സന്നിധിയിലേക്ക് ഭഗവദ്ഗീതയുടെ പതിനെട്ട് അധ്യായങ്ങളെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്ന പതിനെട്ട് പടികളിലൂടെ എത്തിച്ചേരാം. വിമാനം വിമലാകൃതി (വിമലാക്കൃതി) വിമാനമാണ്; ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദിവ്യ തീർത്ഥം, ചക്ര തീർത്ഥം, പ്രസിദ്ധമായ സ്വസ്തിക ആകൃതിയിലുള്ള കിണർ എന്നിവയുൾപ്പെടെ നിരവധി തീർത്ഥങ്ങളുണ്ട്. തായാർ ഷെൺബഗവല്ലി (പങ്കജവല്ലി). പെരിയാഴ്വാരും തിരുമംഗൈ ആഴ്വാരും ഈ ദിവ്യദേശത്തെ നാലായിര ദിവ്യ പ്രബന്ധത്തിൽ മംഗളാശാസനം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

O Lord (Parashurama) who in former times wielded the great victorious axe and destroyed the kings of the earth thrice seven (twenty-one) generations! Grant me the means by which I may worship your resounding, anklet-adorned divine feet. O Lord who stands at Thiruvellarai, where the southern breeze enters the great mango groves of the common-ground, makes the jasmine and wild-jasmine (mauval) buds blossom, and comes spreading their rich fragrance!
