Sri Varadaraja Perumal (Kamala Varadaraja) Temple, Arasar Koyil

Over 2000 years old and recently renovated, this Vaishnava temple at Arasar Koyil enshrines Sri Varadaraja standing with his Devis on either side, and he is regarded as elder to the Varadaraja Perumal of Kanchipuram. Revered as a 'Kubera Sampath Shakti' temple, its supreme glory is the Perundevi Thayar, Sri Sundara Mahalakshmi, who graces devotees seated in a separate shrine with six fingers on her right foot, radiantly beautiful as her name suggests. This wondrous six-fingered form is honoured as the original source-form of all the 64 avatars of Lakshmi, and so the Thayar here is also called Sri Adi Mahalakshmi. Six is the number of Shukra (Venus); temple tradition holds that Shukra worshipped this Perundevi and was blessed, and it is believed that even today Shukra comes every Friday to worship Mahalakshmi, either formless or in some form such as a human or a peacock. Little known beyond local devotees, this very ancient shrine received renovations in the times of the Pallavas and Cholas, and the sculptures and inscriptions carved on its mandapa pillars are wonderful.

'குபேர சம்பத் சக்தி' கோவிலாக போற்றப்படும், *இத்திருத்தலத்தின் பெரும்சிறப்பே* தனி சன்னதியில், (zoom செய்து காணவும்) *வலது காலில்* *ஆறு விரல்களுடன்* பெயருக்கேற்றார்போல *பேரழகாய்* *அமர்ந்த* *கோலத்தில்* *திருக்காட்சியளிக்கும்* பெருந்தேவியாகிய *ஸ்ரீ சுந்தர மஹாலக்ஷ்மி* *தாயார்தான்.* (ஆறு விரல்கள் கொண்ட இந்த அற்புதமான திருவடிவம்தான் அனைத்துவகையான 64 லக்ஷ்மி அவதாரங்களின் ஆதி மூல வடிவமாக போற்றப்படுகிறது. அதனாலேயே, இத்தல தாயாரை ஸ்ரீ ஆதி மஹாலக்ஷ்மி என்றும் அழைக்கின்றனர்) ஆறு என்பது சுக்கிரனின் எண். ஸ்ரீ சுக்கிரன், இத்தல பெருந்தேவியை வழிபட்டு பேறுபெற்றார் என்கிறது தலவரலாறு.
