Sthala Mahātmyam
Set at the foot of the Pothigai hills on the banks of the Tamiraparani river, this Vaishnava temple is reckoned to be about 2,000 years old. Beneath its vimana, the Lord gives darshan as Sri Adimoola Perumal in a somewhat large standing form together with his consorts, while before the divine couple, on either side, the sages Pitru and Markandeya are seated in meditation, a special sight of this shrine. It is revered as one of the sthalams where the Lord, as Adimoola, graced the elephant Gajendra and granted him liberation. Although twenty-four places across Bharat are linked with this leela, the Srimad Bhagavatam records the Gajendra Moksha as having occurred at the foot of the Pothigai hills, so this temple is honoured as the Gajendra Moksha sthalam. Little known outside the locality, it is said to have been built in the 9th century; inscriptions call the town Athani Nallur, Karikaathapuram and Poimaam Poompozhil, and name the Lord as the one who protected the elephant. Counted among the parihara sthalams, it uniquely celebrates Thaipoosam, a festival associated with Lord Murugan, as its great annual utsavam.

(🙏🏻 சிறப்புக்கள் பல பெற்ற இத்திருத்தலத்தின் பதிவுகள் சில மட்டும்; பொதிகை மலையடிவாரம், தாமிரபரணி ஆற்றின் கரையில் அமைந்துள்ள, சுமார் 2000-ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான இந்த வைணவ ஆலய இத்தரவிமானத்தின் கீழுள்ள கருவறையில் நம் திருமால், ஸ்ரீஆதிமூல பெருமாள் எனும் திருநாமம்கொண்டு (🙏🏻சற்றே பெரிய திருத்தோற்றமாக) தேவியருடன் நின்ற திருக்கோலத்தில் அருட்காட்சியளித்திட, இறைதம்பதியரின் முன்னே இருபுறமும் பித்ரு, மார்கண்டேய மகரிஷிகள் அமர்ந்து தியானித்திருப்பது தலச்சிறப்பாகும். கஜேந்திரன் எனும் யானைக்கு, நம் பெருமாள் ஆதிமூலமாக அருள்புரிந்து மோட்சமளித்த தலங்களுள் இத்திருத்தலமும் ஒன்று என்பது மற்றுமொரு தலச்சிறப்பாகும். (🤔நம் பெருமாள், யானைக்கு அருள் செய்து திருவிளையாடல் (நடத்திய) நடந்த வரலாற்றுடன் தொடர்புடையதாக நமது பாரதம் முழுவதும் 24-தலங்கள் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டாலும், 'ஸ்ரீமத் பாகவத்தில்' கஜேந்திர மோட்ச திருவிளையாடல் பொதிகை மலையடிவாரத்தில் நடந்தததாகவே குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. எனவே, இத்திருத்தலம் கஜேந்திர மோட்ச தலமாக போற்றப்படுகிறது) உள்ளூர் மக்களை தவிர வெளியூர் பக்தர்களால் அதிகம் அறியப்படாத பல பழமையான வைணவ திருத்தலத்தலங்களில், ஒன்பதாம் நூற்றாண்டில் கட்டப்பட்டதாக அறியப்படும் இத்திருக்கோயிலும் ஒன்று. (கல்வெட்டுகளில் இத்திருக்கோயிலின் ஊர், அத்தாணி நல்லூர், கரிகாத்தபுரம், பொய்மாம் பூம்பொழில், என்றும் இத்திருத்தலத்து இறைவனை ஆனைகாத்தருளிய பிரான்எனவும் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது) நம் பெருமாள் தம்பதியருக்கு உகந்த அனைத்து முக்கியமான விழாக்களும் சிறப்பாக கொண்டாடப்படும் (பரிகார ஸ்தலங்களில் ஒன்றாக போற்றப்படும்) இத்திருக்கோயிலில், வித்தியாசமாக, (எம்பெருமான் முருகனுக்கே உகந்த) தைப்பூச நிகழ்வு பெரும் திருவிழாவாக கொண்டாடப்படுவது தலவிசேஷம்). 🙏🏻ஓம் நமோ நாராயணாய நமக: 🇮🇳👍🏻 *பாரத நாடு* *பழம்பெரும் நாடு!* *நீரதன் புதல்வர்!* *இந்நினைவகற்றாதீர்!*
