This ancient Vaishnava temple at Kottur, a small village, is one of the many old but little-celebrated Vishnu shrines of Thiruvarur district. In the sanctum the Lord, Sri Venkatajalapathi (our Venkatavan), grants darshan standing together with His consorts Sri Devi and Bhudevi. A cherished local custom marks the temple's speciality: devotees who are unable to travel to Tirumala Tirupati for darshan make their vows and fulfil their nerthikadan here instead, worshipping this Venkatesa as their own nearby hill Lord. Vaikunta Ekadasi is the great festival season celebrated with grandeur at this shrine. On Saturdays, worship of Sri Anjaneya (Hanuman) is offered for wellbeing, and worship of the utsavar is offered for prosperity, together forming another of the temple's special observances. Though known mainly to the local people, this quiet and time-honoured sanctuary preserves the devotion of generations who look upon it as their neighbourhood Venkatachalapathi, and it continues to draw those seeking the grace of the Lord of the seven hills without the long journey north.
